On 18 May 2023, a number of prosecutors from the Office attended a conference on ‘Trusts and other Legal Arrangements – Basic Concepts on ML/TF and Sanction Evading Risks’, organised by the National Coordinating Committee (NCC).
Speakers at the conference from the MFSA, the FIAU and the Office of the Commissioner for Revenue, covered a variety of topics relating to trusts and other legal arrangements: ranging from the basic concept of trusts and an overview of trusts under Maltese law, to the AML obligations of trusts and trustees, the notion of beneficial ownership, the use of legal arrangements for the evasion of sanctions, and a discussion of trusts from a tax perspective.
